What Is This Nasal Spray?

According to what we’ve found, a group of Finnish researchers want to launch a study and find out if a simple product like nasal spray could help people with gambling addiction eliminate it. It is reported that 2.7% of Finns aged 15-74 struggle with a gambling problem, one way or another. In 2017, a report by the UK’s Gambling Commission showed an even bigger number – two million Brits were either problem gamblers or at the beginning of a serious addiction. So, there is a nasal spray created that might help gamblers fight this problem.

What is this weird method? The spray is fast-working and contains a special ingredient called Naloxone, which is often used for overdoses of drugs and opiates. It was approved in 2015 by the U.S. FDA for an emergency opiate treatment. The Naloxone blocks the production of dopamine, which plays a central role in addictions. The spray is created by Hannu Alho, who is a professor of addiction medicine at the Helsinki-based national institute for health and welfare, and his team. He has shared that the formula of this spray is very useful and fast-working. In the past, professor Alho explained that they’ve created a pill that contained a similar to the Naloxone substance, however, it wasn’t as efficient and the spray. The pill takes about an hour before it’s absorbed, while the nasal spray goes straight to the brain and starts working in just a few minutes. There is going to be a big experiment with about 130 people – half will try the nasal spray for 3 months; the other half will be given a placebo for 3 months. We’re not sure what the results are, but we sure know how people are reacting to this whole new ‘treatment’! Let’s have a look!

What Do People Think?

Of course, when something new pops up as a solution to a problem, whether it is some kind of medicine or action, people might not take it seriously at the beginning. When the nasal spray against gambling addiction was first presented to the public as an idea in January 2018, there were mixed reactions towards this, um, let’s call it ‘cure’. Professor Alho had the opportunity to share a little bit more about the spray at the RNZ (Radio New Zeland). This was even a very intense topic for discussion at the famous Emmy award-winning daytime talk show ‘The Doctors’! Although they had a good laugh and didn’t seem to take this seriously, the host and his guests were interested if the spray might actually work and are looking forward to the results. However, subscribers are not as active as on their other videos on YouTube and they don’t seem to be into the idea.

There are a few comments that are sceptical, the same is on Twitter as well. A lot of people assume that using Naloxone might cure their gambling addiction but might find the substance addictive. Some also share that self-control plays a huge role in this case because you could easily choose not to use the spray and it would be all a waste of time and money. On the other hand, there is a #naloxone going on Twitter and there are organized pieces of training in Ohio and Ireland – this course gives you the opportunity to administer Naloxone in an emergency. There are even discussions in which pharmacies you could buy a kit with the substance to help someone with a drug or other addiction. This could save someone’s life!
